I love his new song. Have you heard it? It is amazing and sexy and oh so Steven.
Then I watched the video and the cyclone of conflicting emotions came roaring in.
1. Pride in him for rocking it and showing the youth obsessed generation that thinks Justin Boober somehow invented music. (subrant about how youth is wasted on the young could go in here, but I would lose steam)
2. NICOLE SCHERZINGER. Need more. Glad he had her in it instead of his AI Co-Host.
3. Double standards… consider the fury that would be unleashed if Madonna had done a video with a nude star, aged 18, male. The shouts of “whore” “old hag” and other taunts about the dryness of her nether regions would follow.
4. A bit off-putting that the girl in the video is SO young. Yes, I know he did Crazy in the 90s with a young Alicia Silverstone in Thelma and Louise-ish themed video with his own daughter on a strip pole emulating his moves. I KNOW. I already said the emotions were conflicting, so shut up. I still think in this video? He overdid it. It was too much like “See? I am a rockstar! Barely legal women drop trou for MEEEEE!” Who is he marketing to? His new fans from American Idol? Perpetrating the myth that no matter how old the man is, the prize is still an 18 year old girl? Even though Steven is happily in a relationship with a woman much older than that? Of course, we do get the see the matronly Nicole Scherzinger later (hahaha, at people I read who call her OLD – bitch please, that body? please.) But then again, that just illustrates the double standard.
And I think THAT is why Steven Tyler’s new video bothers me the most. He has a vehicle where he could have really portrayed a strong and positive message to women. Including and not limited to his three daughters he adores. And I believe he does adore them. HOWEVER. Had his video included a shade more variety of women who had been hit by the Steven Tyler Charisma stick, it would be better. (I know men like him too, but bear with me thinking his whole “Rockstar = CHICKS FOR DAYS” is what I am talking about)
Had I seen the video first? I would not have bought the song.
So, Steven, next time you want to make a video, it would be cool if you remembered that women from your grandson’s age to the age your beloved Mom would be are still enjoying your music. And we really did not need to see quite so much of that naked teenager.
